Solar and Lunar Eclipses: What happens, what it does to us, and how Occultists use the energy
Introduction
Perhaps one of the most potent astrological events is one that often seems mysterious to us Earthlings: eclipses.
The most common guidance related to eclipses is, very simply, “don’t look straight at it.” But if we go past the surface of being wowed by what an eclipse looks like, then we can get a truer sense of what an eclipse does to us and does to our planet.
So, since eclipse season occurs regularly, let’s understand it on the deeper levels. Why? Because doing so enables us to use these potent times to our greatest advantage (and to avoid being surprised!).
The bottom line: Eclipses have a significant effect on our lives and our planet, and can catalyze major changes—whether we want it or not.
This article unfolds in the following manner:
What is an eclipse and how often do they occur?
What are the two types (and six sub-types) of eclipses?

What Is An Eclipse and How Often Do They Occur?
Eclipse: Defined
Let us begin by defining the word in question: eclipse, which is both a verb and a noun.
As a verb, “to eclipse” means to obscure or block out; and to deprive (someone or something) of significance, power, or prominence. Related to celestial bodies, “to eclipse” means to block the flow of energy to or from another celestial body.
As a noun, an “eclipse” is “the obscuring of the light from one celestial body by the passage of another.”
Simply put, an eclipse occurs when one celestial body gets in the way of another, and blocks that other’s power.
An eclipse is not about blocking the light. An eclipse is about blocking the energy.
Eclipses: Frequency
The bodies in our solar system are constantly traveling in their orbits, and eclipses happen regularly. We have two to three eclipse seasons every year that involve the Sun and the Moon.
These eclipses happen in pairs—we get an eclipse of one body and then, about two weeks later, we get an eclipse of the other body; therefore, we can refer to this two-week period as “eclipse season.”
In 2018, eclipse season occurred in January/February and July/August.
In 2019, eclipse season occurs in January; July; and December (through January 2020).
In 2020, eclipse season occurs in January, June/July, and November/December.
At the most basic level, eclipse seasons are known as times of endings and beginnings, bringing significant change or redirection.
However, the effects are different depending on which body is being eclipsed, so let’s understand them each in detail.
What Are the Two Types (and Six Sub-Types) of Eclipses?
While an eclipse can technically occur between any two celestial bodies, for the purpose of this article, we are focusing only on two types of eclipses: an eclipse of the Sun; and an eclipse of the Moon.
An eclipse of the Sun (a solar eclipse) has three different manifestations. We can have a total eclipse, a partial eclipse, or an annular eclipse.
The same is true for the Moon (a lunar eclipse): There are three different manifestations. We can have a total eclipse, a partial eclipse, or a penumbral eclipse.
Each type and sub-type has a different impact on us. Total eclipses obviously have the greatest impact, as their effects are stronger than for partial eclipses. For the purpose of this article, we will be discussing the effects of total eclipses.
About: Solar Eclipse
Qualities Associated with the Sun
Before understanding what it means when the Sun is eclipsed, important is to understand what the Sun, itself, represents.
Energetically, the Sun is the power plant for Earth. This gigantic celestial body not only gives us light and heat, but it also gives us the literal energy that powers all of life on our planet.
Consider the difference in size between these two bodies:
Can you understand how easy it is for the Sun to power our little planet?
The Sun delivers us packets of power and information in various forms. All of these are essential to maintaining life on our planet.
Metaphysically, however, the Sun is further considered to be the deliverer of spiritual light—those energies that evolve our consciousness and help us to grow as souls.
Related to this concept, our Sun is also said to be connected to, and in communication with, the even-larger power source that occupies the center of our local Galaxy. That power source is known to the scientific community as the “intense radio source” named Sagittarius A*, and to the metaphysical community as the Great Central Sun. solar eclipse
Our Sun, therefore, receives energy from beyond our local Solar System, and delivers it to us here on Earth. These Galactic energies can be part of what is available to us during a solar eclipse.
Mechanics of an Eclipse of the Sun
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon comes directly between the Sun and the Earth. To say it another way, the Moon blocks the Sun from affecting us here. We lose, for a moment, all energetic communication between Earth and Sun. solar eclipse
Energetic Effects of an Eclipse of the Sun
Recall that the Sun is our source of energy and power. When that energy is blocked, our planet’s energy grids shut down—particularly in the area that is experiencing the eclipse. We lose power. Later, when the block is removed, then power is restored—the grids fire back up again.
Does this make sense?
Let’s consider an example: Can you imagine a cell phone that requires line of sight with a cell tower in order to function? What happens when you’re in a tunnel or surrounded by tall buildings and all line of sight is blocked? You lose coverage. This is what happens when the Moon blocks our Sun. We lose coverage. And we can feel it.
Here’s another important metaphor for the effects of powering down and then rebooting: If you wanted to install upgrades to your computer, what are you typically required to do?
Power down, and reboot.
Spiritual Effects of an Eclipse of the Sun
The powering down phase of a solar eclipse can therefore be used for significant benefit: We can deliberately seek to upgrade ourselves, our energetic bodies, and our lives during this period of downtime, and ask our souls to take us to a higher level once the power comes back on.
This is a time to reboot our lives. To alter our course and have that new direction be stamped onto our soul by the solar eclipse. To make meaningful changes and have them be fueled by our local power source.
It is a significantly positive dynamic.
This dynamic is also happening to our whole planet as well: The Earth’s own operating system is being regularly upgraded and rebooted, as part of our entire Galaxy’s evolution.
About: Lunar Eclipse
Qualities Associated with the Moon
As we did with the Sun, we will begin our exploration of lunar eclipses by first understanding what the Moon represents.
As a celestial body, the Moon is an interesting character. Included in this “interesting” description are the debates about whether it is even a genuine space rock or if we should not want it to be hovering near our planet at all. All that aside, consider the following characteristics that metaphysicists, astrologers, and others associate with the Moon:
It produces no light of its own. It appears to be “dead,” lifeless.* Yet it seems to affect the gravitational pull of Earth, and therefore the rhythms of our planet and our lives.
It is associated with darkness, nighttime, the unconscious, intuition and the idea of going within, and our ancestors.* It is further associated with Black Moon Lilith—not the dark goddess or the celestial body but rather the empty space: that void which lies between the Earth and the Moon, and is linked to dark urges and the desire to exert power over another.**
While some equate the Moon with feminine energy, others disagree and equate it instead with masculine energy.*
However we interpret it, the Moon is a serious being, and through it we can access some of the darker, deeply hidden parts of our soul.
Mechanics of an Eclipse of the Moon
So, what does it mean to say that the Moon, and all of its mysterious energy, has been eclipsed?
This is what happens: A lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, the Earth, and the Moon are perfectly aligned–in this order–such that the Moon is experiencing its own eclipse of the Sun. In this situation, the Earth is doing the blocking, and the Moon has lost its line-of-sight connection to our mutual power source.
Energetic Effects of an Eclipse of the Moon
From the Moon’s perspective, it is experiencing the same effects that Earth does when we have an eclipse of the Sun: The Moon is no longer directly connected to it power plant, and its energy grids are shut down. When power is eventually restored, its grids will power up again and any upgrades that were installed can come online—which will of course have an effect on us here, as we will be interacting with a slightly different lunar energy than before.
For the duration of the eclipse, however, the Moon is not sending much energy back to us here on Earth. Energetically, the Moon is somewhat dormant. Being dormant is a receptive state; a state that draws energy to it. What energy might it draw? Our own.
Spiritual Effects of an Eclipse of the Moon
In this dormant state, it is easier for us to explore the void that lies between us and the Moon. The void that represents our unconscious. The void that represents our ancestral history. The void that represents our darker urges.
The lunar eclipse can allow deep introspection and examination of ourselves, seeing into places that are easier to reach or sense when we are in total darkness.
If we have benevolent intent, then this exploration aims to bring any unhealed energies to healing. If we have malevolent intent, then we may see a rise in malicious attacks on our world during or shortly after the lunar eclipse.
If no unhealed issues have presented themselves for consideration, then we may enter this void with the intent to plant seeds for our future. Into the void, we may whisper our desire for a positive future. After the eclipse, we would cultivate that seed—taking actions in alignment with our goal.
A lunar eclipse, then, is a time when the deep, dark voids in our unconscious are more easily accessed. Indeed, they may present themselves to us even if we have not consciously looked: negative emotions and urges are at the surface of people’s lives during an eclipse of the Moon.
Other Important Information
Does Everyone Feel Eclipses Equally?
No. All seven billion of us do not feel the effects of an eclipse in the same manner. Generally, we are indeed all affected—we all are energetic beings who live on a large celestial being that happens to be affected. Our personal experiences, however, are unique to each of us, and those experiences are determined by at least four factors: our geographical location vis-à-vis the eclipse; our personal astrological chart; our level of sensitivity to subtle energies; and our openness to change.
Do All Eclipses Have the Same Effects?
Yes and no. Yes, all eclipses have the same effects in the sense that the mechanics of a solar and a lunar eclipse are the same each time, as is the purpose. But the answer is also no, in the sense that other factors contribute to the specific energy that a given eclipse brings with it: notably, the astrology of the day on which the eclipse happens.
Therefore, to understand most fully the effects of a particular eclipse, please consult a trusted astrological forecast; it will explain the unique nuances of the event in question.
Occult Uses of Eclipses
I would not be doing my job if I did not address this highly important and impactful side of eclipse season: The occult use of eclipse energies.
While much of the world is focused on the appearance of the eclipse, there are those who know absolutely what the unique energies of this time can do, and therefore deliberately, consciously, and purposefully harness its power.
These are the Occultists. And they come in both positive and negative forms. Let’s start by again defining the word in question: occult.
At its basic definition, “occult” means: “matters regarded as involving the action or influence of supernatural or supernormal powers or some secret knowledge of them” (source: Merriam-Webster). I am using this term “occult” to therefore cover all practices that engage more than simply the five basic human senses. “Occult” therefore includes, but is not limited to, Psychic Abilities, Shamanism, Mysticism, Witchcraft, and Magic.
Occult Practices: Positive and Personal
In the positive, an Occultist (who could be anyone at all) will understand the energies of eclipse season and will use this time to their personal benefit. They will spend time prior to the eclipse adjusting their life to be in accordance with what they desire to occur post-eclipse (see below for Pre-Eclipse Preparation). They may commune with the Sun, the Moon, or the Earth herself, to ask these bodies to lend assistance to this personal effort. They may even assist other people in their lives to do the same. At its basic level, this is not only “occult” practice but, very simply, mindfulness.
Occult Practices: Positive and Collective
For a benevolent Occultist who works for the collective benefit, someone (such as a Lightworker, like myself), will understand what the entire population will be experiencing during eclipse season and will work to mitigate the effects—both in the lead-up to eclipse season and while it is ongoing.
The benevolent Occultist will, for example, remove excess negative energy, make room for more positive energy, and hold the planet’s energy field as stable as it is possible and right to do while everything is off-balance. This function benefits the world precisely because of the fact that many people do not understand what is happening during eclipse time; without benevolent Occultists working in the background to absorb some of the shock, that shock could send the average person into chaos or confusion. Now, this indeed happens anyway—but the job of a true Lightworker is to deal with that which is unnecessary. We bleed off the excess. Without interfering in anyone’s personal will or life path. We also do battle with these guys:
Occult Practices: Negative and Personal
As we know, the energies of eclipses are potent and significant. To a malevolent Occultist, they can be used for significant personal gain. Many things are possible: personal power can be upgraded; dark urges can be amplified; unhealed ancestral energies can be harvested; spell-casting and other forms of dark mysticism can have even greater and longer-lasting effects; and more.
Occult Practices: Negative and Collective
For a malevolent Occultist who works with the energies of the entire planet, such as a Dark Mystic, they will understand what the collective population will be experiencing during eclipse season and will seek to capitalize on that instability for the purpose of fueling the larger Darkness that operates here on Earth.
By Darkness, I mean that which promotes control, fear, captivity, deception, illusion, power over, and all related constructs. This Darkness takes many forms, and derives from numerous different sources.
Recall that in the Cosmos, “energy” is the ultimate currency. And, as we know and have been told repeatedly by some of humankind’s most brilliant minds, there is nothing that is not energy. And so, during a time of potent energetic disturbance, there are those who amplify their powers and attack.
As an example of malevolent Occultists using eclipses for collective upheaval, quite noticeable was the period of the January/February 2018 eclipse season: This period fell in line with the US President’s annual State of the Union address, as well as with an off-site retreat for members of his political party. One who looks closely at events of this time might therefore notice some unusual and illogical things that happened. Having felt those specific events as they were happening, I can confirm that they were indeed generated by Dark Occultists.
Occult Practices: Why Are They Important?
Why mention Occult practices at all? Simply for this reason: They are real.
And they can affect us.
Both negatively and positively.
But also: We can partake in those practices. We are powerful beings.
We have the power inside of ourselves to use the Cosmic energies to our personal, positive advantage.
There is no human who is not, actually, an Occultist. We simply need to transcend the first five senses in order to understand this.
Pre-Eclipse Preparation
Knowing about eclipses is helpful, but using them to our advantage is even better. Now that you understand what each type of eclipse can do for you (solar eclipses facilitate upgrades, and lunar eclipses facilitate introspection as well as healing of deep wounds), you can spend part of your year getting ready for the next eclipse season.
To take full advantage of an eclipse of the Sun, consider whether you are willing to evolve, and to what extent you would allow this. Then, do what is necessary to make space in your life for that higher version of yourself. Making space involves a lot of clearing and removing of that which does not serve us—habits, relationships, activities, thought patterns, etc. Remove the clutter before the upgrade gets installed; otherwise, there will be no room for the upgrade to take hold.
I often use the example of buying new furniture for the living room: You need to remove the old furniture set from the room before the new set arrives. Yes?
To take full advantage of an eclipse of the Moon, begin clearing away the unhealed parts of your soul that are at the surface. If we want to dive deep, then we must have clear access to that depth. This requires everything in between to be dealt with already. Yes, it takes work. Yes, it can be unpleasant. So the decision is ours: How badly do we want to do this, and will it be worthwhile?
As well, prior to a lunar eclipse, decide whether you indeed want to go into the depths of your soul. If so, then decide what you would like to do there. If planting a seed is under consideration, then think clearly about that seed: If it sprouts, will you welcome it? Recall that lunar eclipses happen regularly; there is no rush to plant.
Conclusion
Hopefully, this article has helped you to understand the dynamics of our semi-annual eclipse season and how to use these potent times for your soul’s evolution.
I wish you positive, smooth, and beneficial eclipses. And I would be happy to assist you with your process, whether it involves clearing, healing, upgrading, or mentoring, or all of the above.
