Each stone has numerous benefits to the physical body, emotional body, psychic abilities, and spiritual path. Below for each stone is a small selection of key characteristics, but please note that more information is available online or in your favorite crystal reference book. Also included on this page are the properties of metals, pearls, and wood. metaphysical properties of crystals

As well, it is important to note that a stone will sometimes call to us for its own reasons, and it will not matter what the books and websites say are its beneficial properties. We will just feel that “there’s something about that crystal…” In such instances, perhaps it will be our hearts that help us to know if the item is right for us.

Note: Names are grouped into their main category. For example, all Quartz names (such as Rose Quartz and Smoky Quartz) are found under “Quartz”; then see the subcategory for “Quartz, Rose” or Quartz, Smoky.”

Amethyst: Amethyst is well known for being able to afford energetic protection, particularly when our defenses are weakened (such as by alcohol or drugs), and particularly against entities or other forms of attachments. The energy of this purple stone is used to fill one’s aura, thereby creating a bubble of protection. This energy also cleanses the body and energy field.

Amethyst is also known for its ability to stimulate and open our intuition and psychic skills. It promotes spirituality, higher states of consciousness, and connection with the divine. It has calming properties, which help to ease stress, focus the mind, and enhance meditation.

Physically, Amethyst is said to help the immune system, the digestive system, the endocrine system, the respiratory system, the blood, and pain.* It is particularly useful for issues of the head (e.g., headaches, clear thinking, memory, neural connections). Amethyst is also used to release addictions.

Amethyst, Lavender: According to Judy Hall, Lavender Amethyst “has a particularly high vibration. Double-terminated [versions of this crystal] take you into beta brain waves. They also stimulate and then calm the throat and heart chakras. [Flower-like formations of this stone] bring light and love into the environment.”

Apatite: Apatite is used often by healers and is helpful for working with karma and alternate lifetimes. It is said to promote humanitarian and service-oriented attitudes. It also assists with manifestation.

Physically, Apatite may help with arthritis and inflammation; may increase the metabolic rate; and may help the glands, meridians, and organs.

Apatite, Green: Green Apatite is associated with sending “healing energies to the Earth”* and communicating with Nature Spirits. It is said to open psychic and intuitive abilities.

It also awakens the knowledge of the heart,* allowing “one to clearly communicate the balanced wisdom of the mind and heart.”*

According to Robert Simmons, Green Apatite helps one to maintain inner balance while putting out energy, a clear energy field, and a heart-centered focus, which is ideal for teachers and healers.*

This stone is also used for manifestation, particularly for manifesting abundance and money.

Mohs hardness: 5
Group: Calcium Phosphate

Aqua Lemuria: Aqua Lemuria is the name given to a glass-like stone said to have been formed by a volcano in Indonesia. Given the island’s proximity to the lost continent of Lemuria, this stone is said to carry the energies and wisdom of that ancient civilization, and to offer the ability to download that wisdom.

Aqua Lemuria can help one to connect with deeper levels of the heart. It offers soft, loving, feminine energies; connection to ancient times; access to the Akashic Records; communion with the higher realms; and the pure vibration of the water element, which helps to cleanse and charge one’s aura.

Aventurine: Aventurine is a form of Quartz that also contains particles of other minerals, which are what give Aventurine its colors.

Overall, this stone is associated with luck, prosperity, and opportunity. It also enables one to live from their heart, and therefore promotes feelings of well-being, compassion, and empathy.* As well, Aventurine merges the intellect and emotions, enables one to see alternate possibilities, and enhances the qualities associated with leadership.*

Aventurine is also used to protect against geopathic stress and to absorb harmful electromagnetic frequencies (which requires it to be cleansed often). It may also protect the heart from being drained by psychic vampires.*

According to Judy Hall, Aventurine has a strong connection to the Devic Kingdom (the nature spirits).

Physically, Aventurine benefits the nervous system, connective tissue, skin, metabolism, blood pressure, inflammation, and “the adrenals, lungs, sinuses, heart, and muscular and urogenital systems.”*

Aventurine, Green: Green Aventurine is beneficial for optimism; vitality; good fortune; helping one to flow more easily through changes; and physical and emotional healing, especially related to the heart. It offers is associated with associated with water and the Earth, and offers a connection to the Devas (nature spirits) and elementals.

Aventurine, Yellow: If one is oversensitive, then Yellow Aventurine can help them to feel more in control. As well, this stone helps one to feel at ease in being themselves, and so is especially beneficial for children who might feel shy or sensitive, or who may lack self-confidence or ease in being in their physical bodies. Yellow Aventurine also instills compassion, understanding, and inner strength. Physically, it can balance and enhance the flow of energy in the body, reduce inflammation, and calm headaches.

Citrine: “Citrine” is actually a name applied to two different stones. First is “Natural Citrine,” which is a form of Quartz, and carries the properties of that stone. Added to these are the following unique characteristics: Citrine is often used to attract abundance and wealth. What it is is a stone that enhances “manifestation”: the ability to manifest in the physical plane one’s desires and goals. It stimulates creativity and imagination. It also stimulates personal will (or persistence), which helps one to complete the manifestation process, thereby enabling abundance.

Mohs hardness: 7.
Group: Quartz (silicon dioxide).

Second, “Citrine” is also the name given to Amethyst that has been heated to change the color to yellow. This latter stone is referred to as “Heat-Treated Amethyst” or “Heated Citrine.” Since Amethyst is also a form of Quartz, this second stone has many (but not all) of the characteristics noted above. Additionally, according to Naisha Ahsian, Heat-Treated Amethyst “is highly stimulating to…the seat of the will. It enables one to be more assertive and outgoing. It can assist one in setting [and maintaining] proper emotional boundaries…. This stone helps to lighten dark thoughts and brings optimism, playfulness and happiness into one’s energy systems.”

Fluorite: If there is disorder, disorganization, chaos, or lack of structure in your body, energy field, or life, then Fluorite is for you. This stone brings structure, organization, and stability to our physical and energetic worlds. Per Naisha Ahsian, “Fluorite is a force of order in the stone kingdom.”

According to Judy Hall, Fluorite also “improves physical and mental coordination,” “assists balance and coordination,” and increases dexterity.

Fluorite’s ability to organize also applies to: information (which assists learning, thinking, and the integration of knowledge); and emotions. Per Robert Simmons, “Fluorite can act as a ‘psychic vacuum cleaner,’ clearing the atmosphere of confusion, cluttered thoughts, negativity and any sort of astral ‘hangers on’ who are making mischief in one’s environment…. Thus, for those who need to make many clear-headed choices…Fluorite can be an important ally.”

Spiritually, this stone enhances the awareness of higher consciousness, promotes spiritual awakening, “helps one attune to higher guidance during meditation…[and] is ideal for strengthening one’s ability to receive psychic information from energy fields.”*

Physically, Fluorite is said to help infections, viruses, illness such as colds and flu, arthritis, the spine, pain, the skin, mucus membranes, “ulcers and wounds,” DNA damage, and “teeth, cells, and bones.”*

Fluorite, “Rainbow”: Rainbow Fluorite is the name given to a single piece of Fluorite that contains more than one color of the stone. To understand a specific piece of Rainbow Fluorite, it is best to learn about each of its individual colors.

Fluorite, Blue: This stone is particularly useful for communication and calming.

Fluorite, Green: This stone is particularly useful for “grounding excess energy, [dissipating] emotional trauma, and [clearing] infections.”* Green Fluorite can also “cleanse and heal the heart chakra.”*

Fluorite, Purple: This stone is particularly useful for meditation, psychic abilities, and purification.

Fluorite, Yellow: This stone is particularly useful for creativity, intellectual abilities, and detoxing the body.*

Gold: Gold has long been associated with royalty, vitality, confidence, and the solar force.

It is the chosen metal for jewelry and embellishments of not only the wealthiest individuals but also those who are high mystics: “Gold is the metal which most easily conducts electricity,” it “magnifies the power of most gemstones,” and it is therefore “an all-purpose conductor of the subtle energies of stones.”*

Gold embellishes the tombs of Egyptian kings, is worn on the heads of European monarchs, and is found as buried treasure across the world’s sacred sites.

Metaphysically, gold is “related to wordly knowledge and an understanding of manifestation.”*

Energetically, this metal is an active, creative force. It is fundamentally a masculine energy.

Per Naisha Ahsian, gold is stimulating and helps one to express their energy in the world. It thus promotes passion, creativity, and confidence.* This stimulation can activate the lower chakras, of course.* But it can also activate the emotional body and in doing so help one to overcome depression, emotional paralysis, and fear.* The rewards include optimism, excitement, and forward movement.

Gold is linked to the energy of the Sun, which enables this metal to stimulate “one’s will to grow,” to step out of their comfort zone, and to “joyfully interact with the physical realm.”*

Hematite: Hematite is well known for two characteristics: its ability to ground and its ability to protect.

The grounding energies of this stone make it an excellent choice for the perpetually un-grounded or scattered person, for anyone who is moving or traveling, and during meditation. These energies can also help to calm agitation and anxiety.

Coupled with this, Hematite offers protection from negative energies, including electromagnetic frequencies. It is therefore useful to have throughout the home, office, or car.

Metaphysically, Hematite helps you to stop repeating mistakes, learn from them, and be stronger for it. Indeed, strength—particularly the masculine form of that energy—is one energy that it offers. According to Judy Hall, Hematite also “brings the mind’s attention to basic survival needs.” Hall explains that it also facilitates better concentration, focus, original thinking, and the ability to solve problems.

Mohs hardness: 5.5-6.5.
Group: Iron oxide. moldavite properties moonstone healing crystal healing properties crystals

“Hematite,” Magnetized (manmade): Natural Hematite is not magnetic. These beads are therefore a mixture of Hematite and small amounts of other minerals that enable the Hematite to hold a strong and permanent magnetic charge. The reason for doing this is because magnets can be powerful healing tools: They have been used in various cultures for millennia as ways to manipulate and re-balance the energies in the body. Magnetized “Hematite” therefore combines Hematite’s properties with the energy-manipulating abilities of magnets. More information about using magnets for health is here.

These beads contain magnets. They should not come into contact with a pacemaker.

Herkimer “Diamonds”: “Herkimer Diamond” is the name given to a variety of Quartz that is generally found only in and near the town of Herkimer in New York, United States. They are harder than most other Quartzes, and grow in “short, small, stubby double-terminated shapes and [their] glossy surfaces make them…resemble Diamond crystals.”* Herkimer “Diamonds” are therefore characterized by hardness and gloss.

Energetically, these are high-vibrational stones. According to Robert Simmons, Herkimers “are manifestations of pure, solidified spiritual Light…[and] emanate a high, harmonious energy.” [RS]

Spiritually, these stones may be used for communicating with the angelic realms, connecting with the higher realms, incorporating higher realities into daily life, expanding one’s consciousness, activating the light body, increasing psychic sensitivity, meditation (especially in communion with the higher realms), telepathy, lucid dreaming and other forms of dream work, “stimulating inner vision,” past-life recall, astral travel, time travel, interdimensional work, grid work, healing the Earth, and “other unconventional inner exploration methods.”** “This stone stimulates conscious attunement to the highest spiritual levels and to your own potential….opens channels for spiritual energy to flow….[and brings] your soul’s purpose forward.”*

The very high and pure vibration of Herkimer “Diamonds” may therefore be used for ascension: the process of raising one’s physical and spiritual vibration and consciousness to a higher level of existence.

Physically, Herkimers are a purifier: they can purify and detoxify the body and energy field, and remove blockages as well as lower-frequency energies. These stones also “assist in general healing by increasing the amount of Light energy [that] the body can utilize.”* According to Judy Hall, a Herkimer “Diamond” treats “disease by contact; relieves insomnia caused by geopathic stress or electromagnetic pollution; corrects DNA, cellular disorders, and metabolic imbalances….[and] promotes past-life recall of injuries and disease that still affect the present life.”

Herkimer “Diamonds” are used by healers in their treatment rooms and on patients. The stones also make excellent gem elixirs and room sprays that cleanse and uplift a space.

Howlite: Spiritually, Howlite is an excellent stone to use for meditation and connecting with the higher realms. It is said to “link the user to [a] higher spiritual consciousness,”* and as such is associated with Heaven. As well, this stone can help users to remember their past lives. It is also good for heightening awareness.

Emotionally, Howlite is best known for its calming abilities. It promotes calm especially in the face of anxiety and stress. It is commonly used to treat insomnia that is due to an overactive mind. Similarly, this stone helps to instill patience.

Howlite is also said to help dispel anger and rage, whether it is our own or is directed toward us from others.

Physically, the calcium in the stone itself is said to help the calcium levels in our bodies. Along this line, Howlite is used for disorders related to teeth, bones, and soft tissue.

Labradorite: Labradorite is a shamanic stone that helps one to access other realms, realities, and lives (including past, parallel, and future). It enables one to move between these realities, and to penetrate “the veils of the Void, where all knowledge and possibility are held.”*

Labradorite is also known as a stone of magic, awakening one’s innate magical and psychic abilities. These include “clairvoyance, telepathy, astral travel, prophecy, psychic reading, access to Akashic records, past-life recall, [and] communication with higher guides and spirits.”*

Additionally, Labradorite offers protection for the physical body, especially while the user is doing shamanic work or traveling to interdimensionally.

Labradorite also helps to identify the root of a problem or illness; the stone has the ability to bring unconscious information to the surface of one’s awareness. This characteristic further enables one to align more clearly with their spiritual purpose, and then to experience the flow of synchronicities that comes with the connection to that purpose. This eventually raises one’s consciousness and life.

Physically, Labradorite “treats disorders of the eyes and brain, relieves stress,” balances the hormones, lowers blood pressure, regulates metabolism, “calms an overactive mind,” and can reveal the true cause of an illness.*

Mohs hardness: 6-6.5.metaphysical properties of crystals

Lava: Pushed up from the Earth’s core as liquid rock, lava is the hardened substance that creates much of the planet. It is therefore highly grounding, even so grounding as to be soothing. Being literally a part of the Earth’s foundation makes this stone stabilizing—especially during times of change.

It also strengthens our connection to Mother Earth.*

Metaphysically, this rock provides clarity. It helps to stabilize and clear our energy and emotions. It can thus give us guidance and understanding about our lives.

As well, lava is said to offer strength and courage to those who work with it.

Being birthed from tremendous heat, Lava is also associated with the energies of fire. Fire sometimes means birth or rebirth, as well as of course heat.

Note that molten lava is filled with bubbles of gas; as it cools and hardens, the rock becomes porous, and so these stones are irregularly shaped and have natural holes in them.

Lepidolite: Lepidolite is “one of the most powerful stones for countering stress, worry, fear, grief,” anxiety, nervousness, nightmares, sleeplessness, loss, depression, and trauma.* It is therefore an excellent stone to help Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It is also beneficial for children, particularly empathically sensitive children, and animals.

The energy of Lepidolite promotes the inner states of serenity, calm, peace, and grace. These traits help the user when responding to external situations that are challenging, emotional, and even hostile.

As well, if one “is depressed, [Lepidolite] allows for the willing descent into the grief beneath the depression.”* This stone helps one to “disengage one’s sense of identity from” past experiences, preventing one from using traumas “as a badge of courage or a secret source of pride,” and rather encouraging the user “to identify solely with the presence of the Creator and the present moment.”*

Physically, Lepidolite helps to create emotional balance and mental balance. It also helps to diminish the role of an overactive sympathetic nervous system (the fight-or-flight system), enabling one to be more present in the parasympathetic nervous system (the rest and relaxation response). Much healing can result from the latter state, including healing of disharmony that has been caused by extreme stress.

Lepidolite, Lilac: Lilac Lepidolite is a pale purple form of lepidolite that is currently found only in Zimbabwe, Africa. It carries the above-mentioned properties of Lepidolite, but adds the following benefits:

– connection to the Higher Self;
– awareness of the Divine;
– co-creation with the Divine;
– an inner state of “peace, serenity and love,” particularly in response to stress, nervousness, tension, grief, loss, depression, trauma, major life changes, and nervous breakdowns;
– healing of the heart;
– inflammation, arthritis, and joint pain; and
– sleep problems and nightmares, including in children.*

Mmetaphysical properties of crystals

Moldavite: Moldavite has extraterrestrial origins: It was formed by a meteorite that crashed into Earth almost 15 million years ago. This particular crash is noteworthy because of its “tremendous power. The force of the impact explosion has been estimated at six trillion megatons…. The [temperature]…was high enough to vaporize rock, and the main body of the meteorite is believed to have passed completely through the Earth’s crust.”* Back on the surface, a green, glass-like stone was formed, and we call this Moldavite.

Moldavite is revered partly because of its extraterrestrial origin; ancient cultures described it as having fallen from the sky, and the stone features in legends related to the Holy Grail.*

As well, Moldavite is revered for its powerfully high vibration and for the unique, off-planet energies that it carries. Many people believe that Moldavite is here on Earth to help our planet ascend to a higher level of existence. It is therefore considered to be a stone for the New Age.

Energetically, Moldavite is an activator: It activates one’s latent spiritual energies and one’s higher path. As explained by Naisha Ahsian: “Moldavite is a cardinal Storm element stone. Storm represents massive transformation, cleansing and change on all levels…. [Moldavite] carries an intense frequency that deeply activates the entire chakra system, stimulates the kundalini, cracks open one’s psychic channels and propels one into one’s future with the force of a hurricane…. Once you have invoked this ally’s power, it is best to be truly willing to face and release whatever has held you back so far.”

When used in meditation, Moldavite offers energetic activations, including by “energizing the interconnections between all aspects of one’s etheric, astral, causal and physical bodies”;* expanded awareness “that would put any hallucinogen to shame”;* “amazing cosmic journeys”;* communication with beings in other dimensions, on other planets, and across the cosmos; interdimensional travel; and a feeling of connection to, and oneness with, all of Creation.

The very high vibration of Moldavite also offers energetic and psychic protection for its users; it helps one to vibrate so high that lower energies, entities, and attachments are released and then repelled. Moldavite is one of the most important stones for protection, and indeed this is one key reason why many energy workers use it.

Moldavite’s ability to activate and enhance energies also applies to other stones: It can amplify the properties of stones with which it is paired.

Anyone who is new to Moldavite is encouraged to work with this stone gradually. Several days or even weeks may be needed to acclimate to Moldavite’s energy. Indeed, people “who hold Moldavite for the first time most often experience its energy as warmth or heat, [and this] has happened often enough to have been given a name—the ‘Moldavite flush.’”*

Please note: Moldavite may chip easily.

Mohs hardness: 5.5-7.

Moonstone: As its name suggests, Moonstone is generally connected to the moon and the lunar qualities of yin/feminine energy, cooling and calming energy, intuitive abilities, patience, receptivity, and mystery. This stone is associated with the Goddess, the High Priestess, the Divine Mother energy, the lunar cycles, and the tides.

The energy of this stone awakens psychic abilities, particularly clairvoyance (inner sight) and prophecy; reveals hidden truths, particularly within oneself; assists travel to past and alternate lives; facilitates connection to and communion with spirit guides, and then encourages one to follow their guidance; enables one to more patiently wait for Divine Right Timing; and gently increases feelings of empathy, particularly when such feelings have had to be suppressed.**

Moonstone has a gentle, calming, loving, but wise and protective vibration. Many people feel comfort from it. In males, it can help to expand the feminine half of their energetic body, which brings them to closer to wholeness; enhance their ability to think non-linearly; and cultivate their natural intuitive abilities.*

Physically, Moonstone “is linked to the pineal gland and [so it] balances the hormonal system,”* which is particularly important during times of stress and emotional intensity. This stone may therefore heal “disorders of the upper digestive tract that are related to emotional stress.”* It also aids the rest of the digestive system; aids the reproductive system; assimilates nutrients; “alleviates degenerative conditions of skin, hair, eyes, and fleshy organs”; and treats insomnia.* Moonstone may be used to calm hyperactive, sensitive, or sleep-disturbed children.

Moonstone, Grey: Grey Moonstone “is a stone of perceiving beyond the veil. It is a powerful stone for the clairvoyant and the shaman, assisting one in moving into the unseen realms…[and also in] bringing forth creations from the void.”* This stone has the ability to magnify intentions. According to Robert Simmons, it carries the energy of the new moon.

Moonstone, Peach: Peach Moonstone has a “gentle, loving energy” that supports both heart and mind.* This stone “allows one to perceive the positive, loving existence of the Divine in all situations.”* It has a soothing energy, which soothes worry, anxiety, and the emotional body. Peach Moonstone “is excellent for use by intuitive or sensitive children.”*

Moonstone, Rainbow: Rainbow Moonstone “acts as a prism”; this characteristic “diffuses energy throughout the aura…[clears] the psychic senses…[and deflects] negativity and densities before they enter the energy field.”* This stone therefore offers psychic protection and keeps one’s energy clear. Rainbow Moonstone also offers joy, vitality, purification, inner harmony, and emotional balance.* “They are recommended for anyone who suffers from daily stress or…old emotional wounds…. They are stones of great Light…[and can help to activate] the Rainbow Body of Light.”* Rainbow Moonstones are “aligned with the energies of the Goddess [and the] spirits of Nature.”*

Moonstone, White: White Moonstone “represents the energy of the full moon at the height of its power.”* This stone stimulates psychic perception, inner vision, dream work, and the kundalini energy. White Moonstone also helps men to reach emotional balance and develop their receptive ability.*

Obsidian: Obsidian is silica-rich volcanic glass. Structurally, it is “molten lava that cooled so quickly it had no time to crystallize”*; and precisely because it had no time to crystallize, “its structure contains no regular geometric pattern.”* Therefore, Obsidian is “a stone without boundaries or limitations” and it “works extremely fast and with great power.”*

Furthermore, according to Judy Hall, Obsidian is “merciless in exposing flaws, weaknesses, and blockages.” This stone has a “propensity for exploding the truth into the open.”* “[N]othing can be hidden from Obsidian.”*

Obsidian thus needs to be handled carefully, as its powers can be overwhelming.*

As well, this stone has the ability to “bring negative emotions and unpleasant truths rushing to the surface.”* This tendency offers cathartic, deep soul healing, including for past lives and past traumas.*

Obsidian is also well known for being strongly protective: It forms a shield against negativity; absorbs negative energies; blocks geopathic stress; blocks psychic attack; and removes negative spiritual influences.* Users of Obsidian will need to clean this stone regularly, since it absorbs so much energy.

Obsidian is also highly grounding. Per Judy Hall, it “provides a grounding cord from the base chakra to the center of the earth,” and helps to anchor the spirit into the body.*

This stone is excellent when used to bring about true and meaningful healing, rather than temporary relief: It provides insight into the root cause of a disease or issue.*

Physically and energetically, Obsidian dissolves energy blockages, relieves tension, reduces pain, and—mainly through the aforementioned release of blockages—helps to detoxify the body.*

Spiritually, Obsidian “urges exploration into the unknown,” opens new horizons, clears deep spiritual blockages, and therefore “stimulates growth on all levels and expands consciousness.”* It is also known to help people to face and integrate their shadow selves.*

Obsidian, Black: Black Obsidian has all of the qualities associated with Obsidian, and is especially know for protection and purification.

According to Robert Simmons, Black Obsidian “powerfully eliminates negative energies in oneself and one’s environment. It is like a ‘psychic vacuum cleaner,’ cleansing the auric field of disharmony, negative attachments, astral plane ‘junk,’ and one’s own emanations of anger, greed, fear, resentment, etc.”* As well, its frequency “removes energetic attachments, hooks, and cords,” and seals the aura.*

Black Obsidian therefore creates “a protective shield.”* This is especially useful for empaths and people who are sensitive to energy.

Within its user, Black Obsidian will magnify all negative energies, such as negative thoughts, mental habits, and unconscious patterns, including addiction and abusive behavior. When these are acknowledged and faced, they can be dealt with at their root cause and then released, thus enabling true healing and spiritual growth.*

Black Obsidian is also useful for scrying and communicating with the spirit world.*

Obsidian, Black-Brown: Black-Brown Obsidian (also called Mahogany Obsidian) carries all of the qualities of pure Black Obsidian, but the brown inclusion makes the stone gentler.

Specifically, Black-Brown Obsidian resonates with the Earth, grounds and protects, and gives strength (including to the aura).* According to Judy Hall, it “vitalizes purpose.”

Black-Brown Obsidian is especially useful for clearing old abuse, shame, and humiliation from the second chakra, and for dispelling feelings of being unworthy.*

It “helps reveal limitations one has created due to fear and perceived separation.”* It also, according to Naisha Ahsian, helps one move out of scarcity-mindedness and into abundance.

In terms of protection, Black-Brown Obsidian “can remove negative psychic ‘implants’ that hold one back.”* As well, it shields against psychic attack, astral-level entities, and emotional attacks.*

Physically, this stone enhances the “body’s ability to discharge poisons.”* It helps clear birth trauma.* And it helps “dissolve ancestral patterns of abuse, negativity, hatred or fear,” including from the DNA.*

Mohs hardness: 5 to 5.5
Group: Volcanic Glass

OM: Om is both a symbol and a sound, and it fundamentally represents enlightenment as well as the creation of the universe itself.

As a mystical symbol, Om is comprised of five elements, each representing “a particular state of reality”:* unconscious (or sleep) state; dream state; maya (or illusion); and enlightenment. Thus, by chanting Om, “one can transcend the three [states] of material consciousness, and attain the [realm] of enlightenment.”*

When chanted properly, in three parts, we can feel the vibration it produces within our bodies. This is known as “the primoridal sound of creation.”* It is believed to be “the original vibration of the universe.”*

Om is also written AUM.

The greatest of all the mantras, we can use Om in our spiritual and meditation practice, by chanting it and meditating upon its vibration.

Opal: According to Judy Hall, Opal carries a fine vibration that “enhances cosmic consciousness and induces psychic and mystical visions.” It “strengthens the will to live” and can assist with memory, the blood, the kidneys, the eyes, fevers, and infections. It also helps to access one’s true self and teaches about karma and its consequences. Opal is best used with care, particularly because it can amplify any energies of yours that are scattered, imbalanced, or reactive. Users would do best to clear any unhealthy habits and traits, and to gain more fulsome control of their energies, before working with Opal.

As well, per Hall, “Opal is a protective stone in that, when properly programmed, it makes you unnoticeable or invisible. It can be used when venturing into dangerous places, and in shamanic work where stealth is required.”

Opal, Peruvian Green: Green Opal carries all of the traits of Opal, but it also helps to strengthen relationships. It offers a healing energy that is especially helpful with the emotions.

Their energy may help to cultivate one’s intuitive abilities, provide a sense of calm and centeredness, and instill self-acceptance.

Physically, Pearls are said to dissipate stress, tension, and headaches; and to help disorders of the digestive tract.

Pearls, Freshwater (cultured): Cultured, Freshwater Pearls are said to offer the same properties are natural Pearls.

Mohs hardness: 2.5-3.5.

Peridot: Peridot is a stone that can help you do three important things: stand in your power; align with your purpose; and move forward rapidly.

It is also a stone of protection: It is said to keep evil spirits away. The stone additionally has a strong association with the sun and its energy.

Many people find that Peridot helps them to feel an inner peace; in particular, external jealousies and petty feelings drop away, and the person’s energies turn inward, where we find the feelings of oneness and trust.

Interestingly, Peridot is created in two places: One, within the Earth’s mantle (between the core and the crust), where it is brought to the surface during volcanic activity; and two, in outer space, and brought to the surface by meteors. (The latter gems are rare but do exist.)

Prehnite: Prehnite is a healer’s stone: It “is a stone of unconditional love and the crystal to heal the healer.”* It is often associated with Archangel Raphael, the archangel devoted to health and healing.

Spiritually, Prehnite facilitates connection to higher-dimensional and extraterrestrial beings, including the angelic realms; connection to the Universe itself; precognition (knowing in advance); prophecy; claircognition (clear knowing); harmony with nature, the elementals, and Mother Earth;* and grounding with Mother Earth.

Prehnite “brings joy to the heart and peace to the mind….[and] emanates renewal and hope.”*

This stone helps one to let go of what they no longer need. Especially if one has been hoarding (either physical possessions or the energy of love), Prehnite helps to heal the source of the behavior, including if it comes “from past-life experiences of deprivation.”* It can uncover the source of a fear or nightmare, enabling healing.*

Additionally, “Prehnite quiets restlessness, nervousness and worry,” mainly by grounding one’s energy and “encouraging a sense of peace and calm.”* This stone is therefore “beneficial for hyperactive children and the karmic causes that underlie the condition.”*

Physically, Prehnite’s ability to find the root cause of an issue makes it useful for diagnosing.* It also assists the kidneys, bladder, “thymus gland, shoulders, chest,” lungs, blood, and connective tissue.* This stone also “helps balance and heal the circulatory system and the lymph.”*

Prehnite may be used for protection, including for a home or building.

Quartz (Clear): Clear Quartz is best known for two characteristics: it is an amplifier; and it can be programmed. The former means that this stone will amplify the energies and characteristics of whatever is near it–be it another stone or a feeling. This characteristic is often used by healers to magnify the energies that they channel into a patient.

The latter means that intentions and energies can be set into the stone, and it will hold these programs very well. (Because Clear Quartz is programmed so easily, when you obtain one of these stones, it is important to clear all prior programming that may be in it–either accidentally or deliberately–unless you are aware of the programming and give permission for it. Put The Light Here clears all of our stones prior to using them in our products.) Of all stones, Clear Quartz is essentially the pure and empty vessel, the blank slate, awaiting instructions.

Additionally, this stone can clear blocks in the body, intensify psychic and spiritual experiences, and unlock memories.

“Quartz,” Cherry (manmade): These beads are made with crushed Quartz that is mixed with color and re-formed into a stone. They carry some properties of Clear Quartz, and some properties of glass.

Quartz, Himalayan: Per our supplier for this bead, “Himalayan Gold Quartz is thought to be an extremely high vibration stone used for healing and clearing. It is a fantastic stone for cleansing, energizing and healing work.” Please note: These beads were mined in the southern part of India, not in the Himalayan Mountains.

Quartz, Purple: See Amethyst.

Quartz, Rose: The pale pink stone known as Rose Quartz has become synonymous with love and the heart. It brings gentle emotional healing, as well as an opening of the heart if it is closed. These qualities also help to heal and evolve relationships. Anyone needing more self-love, self-worth, self-forgiveness, and self-acceptance may find a companion in Rose Quartz. It is especially loved by healers, who amplify and spread its soft and needed energy.

Physically, Rose Quartz may assist with the heart and circulatory systems, the chest area, and the kidneys.

Mohs hardness: 7.

Quartz, Smoky: Smoky Quartz is beloved for its ability to both ground a person’s energy as well as to protect their energy against negative influences or negative emotions. Anyone seeking to anchor into their physical body more of the higher frequencies would do well with this stone. Notably, Smoky Quartz is associated with the base of the body: hips; legs; and feet.

It also helps with fear, depression, and letting go of what no longer serves. It may clear the mind and alleviate stress.

Selenite: Selenite is a stone that should be in everyone’s crystal collection, for the reason that it is a cleanser; this soothing white stone cleanses and purifies the energies around it, does not itself need to be cleansed (generally), and so is often found laying next to (or under) other crystals and jewelry. Selenite’s cleansing properties offer protection from harmful energies.

Metaphysically, Selenite has a refined vibration that helps to expand our consciousness and connect us with the higher realms; it is therefore excellent for meditation. It is calming, peaceful, and serene.

Selenite is not often found in beads or jewelry, because it splinters and chips easily.

Mohs hardness: 2.
Group: Hydrous calcium sulfate.

Shungite: Shungite is comprised almost entirely of carbon and is estimated to be 2 billion years old. This stone is currently found only in Russia.

Generally, Shungite is known for three main functions. First, it is a stone for detoxifying and purifying (the physical body, the emotions, the energetic body, and one’s environment). Shungite is also commonly used to cleanse drinking water and then infuse it with the stone’s beneficial properties.

Second, Shungite provides protection from harmful frequencies (especially electromagnetic frequencies [EMF], WiFi, cell phones, electrical towers, geoengineering frequencies, and geomagnetic pollution). It is therefore excellent for empaths, sensitive children, animals, energy healers, lightworkers, and anyone living or working in an urban center.

And third, Shungite is called “the miracle stone” as it seems to cure and heal many ailments. Possibly one explanation is that this stone clears “the body of dysfunctional patterns [that manifest] as disease, emotional difficulties or various types of negativity.”*

Importantly, according to Robert Simmons, Shungite affects the body on its molecular level. Specifically, this stone “works to cleanse and align the particles of the body so that they are open to rapid conjoining with the Light” and the Light Body.* As he explains, when properly aligned, the molecules of the physical body form the skeleton “around which the Light Body can coalesce.”* Yet any “contradictions, diseases and disharmonies within us” create a disharmonious skeleton that blocks the Light Body from forming.* “The highest purpose of Shungite is to facilitate this process.”*

The cellular alignment facilitated by Shungite further gives one an energy field that helps to protect them from negativity.*

Silver: The energy of the metal Silver is associated with the moon and the qualities of lunar energy; “life force in its hidden aspect”; introversion; the unconscious; cooling and calming energy; a sense of mystery; and the archetypal feminine energy.* “Silver is second to gold in its electrical conductivity.”*

Tiger’s Eye: Tiger’s Eye is fundamentally about grounding, balancing, and unleashing our primal energies.

According to Judy Hall, this stone combines the energies of Earth and Sun “to create a high vibrational state that is nevertheless grounded.” Robert Simmons calls it “a stone of the Golden Ray,” and explains that Tiger’s Eye will help a person connect to unconditional love and compassion, and then to ground those energies into the physical world. The stone “anchors change into the physical body,”* helps one take action while “remaining grounded,”* and promotes mental clarity due to the person indeed being grounded into their body rather than flighty.

The grounding effect of Tiger’s Eye comes from its ability to balance parts of the body. It specifically balances and aligns the lower chakras, integrates the hemispheres of the brain (which helps to bring together scattered thoughts), and balances the body’s masculine and feminine energies.*

Tiger’s Eye can bring a balance between extremes, including paradoxes, allowing us to see all sides of an issue.* This also helps us move “out of the world of duality” and into a place of unity.* The stone thus creates “harmony between people with different viewpoints,”* and can help to resolve dilemmas.*

Particularly through balancing the lower chakras and grounding us into our bodies, Tiger’s Eye brings vitality, strength—notably primal strength—and support for physical action.* Per Robert Simmons, it “energizes the body to accomplish the imperatives of the will,” providing endurance through prolonged periods of challenge.

Additionally, Tiger’s Eye “enhances psychic abilities in earthy people,” provides protection against “ill wishing and curses,” and promotes integrity and the correct use of our power.*

This stone also helps with with “self-worth, self-criticism, and blocked creativity.”* It can help to alleviate depression and low moods.* And it can help us to accomplish our goals.*

Per Naisha Ahsian, Tiger’s Eye “carries the frequency of creation—of sunlight upon soil.”*

Overall, this stone helps us identify our true will, needs, and goals, as well as the resources and talents we have to achieve them, therefore helping us to succeed. It can ground our spiritual practices into our physical life, enabling ourselves to be the bridge that links Heaven and Earth.

Family: Quartz (silicon dioxide)
Mohs hardness: 7

Topaz: Metaphysically, Topaz is “extremely supportive” for affirmations, visualization, and manifestation.* “It is said that the facets and ends of a Topaz crystal have both positive and negative energies through which a request to the universe can be focused and then manifested on the earth plane.”*

As well, this crystal promotes openness, honesty, confidence, and “the urge to develop inner wisdom.”* It is traditionally “known as a stone of love and good fortune.”*

Energetically, Topaz aligns the meridians of the body and directs energy to where it is needed most. It therefore stimulates, recharges, and re-motivates; helps to release tension; and helps to induce relaxation.*

Mentally, Topaz enhances mental abilities.

Physically, “Topaz can be used to manifest health.”* In particular, this stone assists digestion, the metabolism, the nerves, the sense of taste, and vision. It also helps to calm and stabilize the emotions.

Topaz, “Sky Blue”: Sky Blue Topaz is the name given to White Topaz that has been artificially irradiated with gamma rays in order to create the blue color. It therefore carries many of the same properties as White Topaz, and adds the benefits the color blue: calming, cooling, and soothing; the energy of the element of water; confidence in speaking; and loyalty, faithfulness, and patience.

Topaz, White (or Clear): According to Naisha Ahsian, “White Topaz embodies the energy of Spirit.” It therefore “facilitates the expression of spiritual energy through all of one’s creations.”*

It is fundamentally a stone of manifestation.

In particular, White Topaz helps to: clarify one’s intention; align that intention with Divine Will; and manifest it in the physical world.*

As well, its clear color means that it remains neutral in the presence of one’s intention, and simply magnifies “whatever energy is focused through it.”* Caution is therefore encouraged: “It is important to hold one’s highest intention to receive the most positive results.”*

Energetically, White Topaz stimulates the higher levels of one’s aura, above the head. This helps to hone “psychic and intuitive gifts.”*

This “is a stone of truth,” helping one to see the truth more clearly as well as to speak their own truths with confidence.*

Tourmaline: Tourmaline is well known for its ability to stimulate and help balance the energy flow within the body and aura. According to Judy Hall, it stimulates the meridians and enhances the flow of energy. It therefore also clears and disperses blockages.

This stone is also able to transform dense energy (including thoughts) into a lighter vibration.*

As well, Tourmaline balances the right-left hemispheres of the brain, as well as the masculine-feminine energies in the body.* As a result, hand-to-eye coordination improves, as do issues such as dyslexia.*

Tourmaline, Black: Black Tourmaline (also called Schorl) is primarily known for its ability to protect.

Specifically, it is known to repel and protect against various forms of negativity, lower energies, entities, and psychic attacks. It is therefore used as a protective talisman, including during shamanic work. The energy of Black Tourmaline can form a protective shield around one’s aura, helping to keep out harmful influences. This stone also offers protection from electromagnetic frequencies and radiation.

Since it absorbs the negative energies, Black Tourmaline must be cleansed regularly. Otherwise, it will begin to emit the harmful frequencies that it has collected.

Rich in iron, this stone’s energy is somewhat heavy, making it an Earthy stone that helps people to be grounded and rooted into the physical world.

Tourmaline, Pink: According to Robert Simmons, Pink Tourmaline “directly touches the heart.” It is therefore the “quintessential heart-chakra stone.”* To that end, it helps to heal the wounds that have touched our heart and emotions.

These wounds include those from past abuse, traumas, and childhood traumas. Pink Tourmaline “can help the emotionally ‘numb’ recover their passion and zest for life.”* This stone is therefore a good choice for healing interpersonal trauma and possibly also dissociation.

It also promotes love: Specifically, it activates “one’s ability to surrender to Love,” to find strength in being vulnerable, and to feel joy in the learning process. [ahsian] In other words, Pink Tourmaline increases our courage to love again,* and provides assurance that it is indeed safe to love.*

This stone is soft, soothing, comforting, safe, and nurturing. It increases one’s ability to be gentle with life.* According to Naisha Ahsian, it is the high lithium content in this stone which provides a calming effect on body and emotions.

Additionally, Pink Tourmaline clears and cleanses the emotional body,* “disperses emotional pain and old destructive feelings,”* can help us to identify unhealthy emotional patterns and heal them,* and “stimulates receptivity to healing energies.”* The stone also repairs holes in the aura, and helps to release stress, worries, and negative attachments.*

As Robert Simmons says, Pink Tourmaline “turns one into a beacon of its loving and healing energies, making it more difficult for others to project negativity in one’s direction and often influencing them towards greater kindness and tolerance.”

This stone feels very much like a strong and protective guardian, keeping us safe as we heal our heart from past hurts and open to deeper levels of love and inner strength.

Wood (from various types of tree): Wood beads are, of course, pieces of a tree that once grew on and was rooted into Mother Earth. They derive from the Plant Kingdom. These beads therefore offer a connection with Mother Earth, a connection with the Tree Beings specifically, and a more general connection with all of nature.

The trees are sometimes considered to be guardian spirits, here on Earth to offer us wisdom, comfort, and protection.

Wood also carries a strength and a grounding energy, delivered in a gentle manner.

In comparison to stones, wood beads add warmth and softness to an item.
