Happy 2026! Time for new benchmarks
Happy New Year! How are you doing?
As this year begins, I want to invite you to make it an uncomfortable one. Yes, I meant exactly that. I invite you to sacrifice your comfort—and to do so in favour of growth.
Let’s look at some definitions to start:
– comfort: “the pleasant and satisfying feeling of being physically or mentally free from pain and suffering” (Cambridge Dictionary)
– familiar: to be “well acquainted with something” (Merriam-Webster)
– growth: “the irreversible increase of an organism’s size over a given period” (biologyonline.com)
– expand: to “become greater in extent, volume, size, or scope” (dictionary.com)
– challenge: “a new or difficult task that tests somebody’s ability and skill” (Oxford Learner’s Dictionary)
– discomfort: “mental or physical uneasiness” (Merriam-Webster)
You may already see where I’m going with this: We don’t grow when we’re comfortable; when things are easy and stay the same. Stagnation holds no novelty. We need challenges in order to become bigger.
Challenges–even small ones–involve discomfort.
When we try something new, we expand. In our brains, new neural connections form, and our brain literally increases in volume. In our minds, we open a new file folder for that new information and experience, expanding our awareness of what’s real and possible. And our energy field gets bigger, to hold the new version of ourselves.
We’re in a time of discovering our true selves, our true purposes here on Earth, and our true potential—as I mentioned in the mid-December newsletter.
The year 2026 wants you to expand to your full potential, to discover who else you are and what else you’re capable of. But to do that you have to step out of your familiar life and habits.
One way to start expanding yourself is to identify a new benchmark that you can aspire to.
Here’s an example of that:
Last summer, I started running. I was doing 5-kilometer runs, and thinking that that was really great. And then I met someone who runs 100-kilometer ultramarathons. That made my little 5ks feel like a quick warm-up. Previously I’d of course known about regular marathons, with a distance of 42.2 kilometers. And my 5k was a good start towards that.
But learning about 100k ultras? Well, that set my benchmark much further out than it previously was. And then I learned about 450-kilometer races…which totally shattered my idea of what humans are capable of.
So I’ve now decided that my first goal is to run a 50k ultramarathon. And eventually? I want to do 100k.
Having the marker for what’s possible pushed out so far from where I was did this for me: It gave me a wide range of possibilities inside of which to explore and grow.
But when that benchmark is right next to where we already are? We stay at that level.
So this is what it’s time for: It’s time for you to set a new benchmark for yourself.
Right now, pick something: something you’re good at but not expert level; something you want from life, even if you think it’s ridiculous to wish for it; something you’ve heard about but never considered to be possible for yourself. And identify the most expansive, highest-level version of it.
If you’ve never traveled outside of your country, then be determined to visit every continent.
If you’re interested in dance lessons, then commit to dancing in a dance recital at the end of this year (then go find out where you can start taking classes).
If you love to learn, then sign up for the first class towards a Masters Degree—even if you’re already retired.
It’s not so important that you ever actually reach that far-away goal, but rather that you know it’s possible to achieve and that you’ve given yourself plenty of space to work towards it.
So: Whatever you chose, set that as your new benchmark for 2026 and beyond. Then take active steps towards that goal. Step out of your comfort zone, shed the familiar, and embrace discomfort. Make yourself bigger. See where your potential truly lies. You will probably surprise yourself.
Feel free to share your benchmark with me! I’ll celebrate your goal, and when we work together, I’ll help you keep on track.
