February News: Nourish your nervous system
Happy February! How are you doing? The middle of winter is an excellent time for some extra self care. Our energies are naturally turned inward, and the snow outside with warm lights inside promotes a cozy feeling. Add to that some candles, soft blankets, warm beverages, and reflective time in quiet spaces, and you have a recipe for nourishing not only your soul but your nervous system as well. Remember: Our nervous systems get frazzled by high-energy, stressful times; but they get calmed by quiet.
But here’s another way to take care of your nervous system that you might not know of: Put oil on your skin.
Why?
Well, our skin is where many of our nerve endings reside, and when that skin is dry and flaky, as it gets in winter, then those nerve endings are exposed. Think of all the energies that bathe you all day long–WiFi, satellites, TV signals, cell phone signals, the electricity coming off of major appliances, the emotions of others. All of those are being felt by your nerve endings; whether or not you consciously notice it. But coating those endings in oil helps to protect them from that energy.
The skin is also our body’s barrier to the world. It is what meets and greets the world each day. And an extra layer of “armour” can help shield you. It also just feels really good and nurturing to have this extra layer on.
So here’s how to do it: Get some good-quality oil. You can use the coconut or olive oil from your kitchen to start, if needed. Or, get skin-specific oils, such as sesame or jojoba. Then, after your bath or shower, take some time to rub this oil all over your skin. Use long, gentle strokes. You can combine this with Abhyanga or lymphatic massages, moving the strokes towards your body’s lymphatic glands. Or just follow your intuition.
Once you have let the oil sink in, then take a moment to feel it protecting you, and move on with your day.
Oiling the skin can soothe our frayed nerves, help to relieve stress, promote calm, and enable deeper sleep. If you try it, let me know what you thought of it.
