Here’s How to De-Stress for the Holidays: November and December tend to be very busy months for us, no matter which holiday we celebrate. So, before that busy-ness sets in, here are two things to think about, in order to minimize your stress levels this holiday season.
1. Minimize the Stimuli: Stress, fundamentally, is a result of our nervous system being overloaded with stimuli. What is “stimuli,” exactly? It’s everything in your life. Everything that your physical and subtle senses encounter each day is stimuli: thoughts; emotions; sounds; sights; things you feel on your skin; everything you taste; all of the types of food that are put into the stomach; your text messages and emails; the energy fields (auras) of the people around you; music on the radio; television shows and movies that you watch–or that are playing near you; the errands you need to run; the WiFi and cell signals that pass through our bodies; everything.
Our regular lives are packed with stimuli. At Christmas time, this just gets amplified. Our overloaded systems get even more bombarded–and the result is more stress. So how can you minimize stress? The answer: Minimize the stimuli to which you expose yourself.
Take away some of the sounds, the sights, the TV and movies, the crowded parties, the dinners out, the packed stores with long line ups. Not all of them. But some of them. And be in a stimuli-free space as much as possible. Eat in silence. Check your emails in silence. Close your bedroom or office door to block sounds from entering. Stand outside in the peace of a snowfall. Minimize the stimuli.

2. Back to Basics: My second piece of advice is “get back to basics.” Over the years, the holidays have gone from a friendly time to spend with loved ones and express our feelings by giving thoughtful gifts or helping out, to a full four weeks packed with layers of superficiality, and even with things we grumble about doing. Do we really need all of the things that comprise a 21st-century Christmas? All of the mass-produced, quickly forgotten, light-on-the-meaning items and activities that fill our homes and calendars, while taking our money and our time; and taking it away from the things that really matter–our loved ones? Maybe… But maybe not.
Maybe, somewhere in recent years, we have strayed from the point. Humans are very good at adding layers of complexity to life. But what we need to do is take away: We need to subtract those layers of complexity. We need to feel into what we’re really celebrating and what we really want. We may find that that answer will be different from the direction in which we had been headed.
So perhaps pause right now and decide what is really the purpose of the holiday season–for you. Then make a plan to align your activities with that purpose. Then stick to it. Hopefully, you’ll have added depth, meaning, and feeling to your month; while taking layers of busy-ness off of your itinerary.
