Metaphysical Properties of Howlite meditation yoga basic mala howlite lava
Spiritually, Howlite is an excellent stone to use for meditation and connecting with the higher realms. It is said to “link the user to [a] higher spiritual consciousness,”* and as such is associated with Heaven. As well, this stone can help users to remember their past lives. It is also good for heightening awareness.
Emotionally, Howlite is best known for its calming abilities. It promotes calm especially in the face of anxiety and stress. It is commonly used to treat insomnia that is due to an overactive mind. Similarly, this stone helps to instill patience.
Howlite is also said to help dispel anger and rage, whether it is our own or is directed toward us from others.
Physically, the calcium in the stone itself is said to help the calcium levels in our bodies. Along this line, Howlite is used for disorders related to teeth, bones, and soft tissue.
Mohs hardness: 3.5
Group: Borates (calcium borosilicate hydroxide).
Metaphysical Properties of Lava
Pushed up from the Earth’s core as liquid rock, lava is the hardened substance that creates much of the planet. It is therefore highly grounding, even so grounding as to be soothing. Being literally a part of the Earth’s foundation makes this stone stabilizing—especially during times of change.
It also strengthens our connection to Mother Earth.*
Metaphysically, this rock provides clarity. It helps to stabilize and clear our energy and emotions. It can thus give us guidance and understanding about our lives.
As well, lava is said to offer strength and courage to those who work with it.
Being birthed from tremendous heat, Lava is also associated with the energies of fire. Fire sometimes means birth or rebirth, as well as of course heat.
Note that molten lava is filled with bubbles of gas; as it cools and hardens, the rock becomes porous, and so these stones are irregularly shaped and have natural holes in them.
Mohs hardness: 3-3.5.
Group: Silicate minerals.

This classic mala has exactly 108 beads.
It’s perfect for a starter mala, and also for advanced people who just want what a true mala does: allows us to count our prayers.
I personally love the basic malas, as they don’t distract us from the purpose of the journey–and that is to turn inward, not get caught up in accessorizing ourselves.
Made with a perfect balance of energies: Howlite, which connects us to the spiritual planes; and Lava, which is the essence of the Earth itself. meditation mala yoga basic mala howlite lava
