Happy Thanksgiving. 🧡

I think it's safe to say that we no longer expect everyone's Thanksgiving to be surrounded by family and automatically "happy."

I actually know that some of us are struggling pretty badly right now. Some are spending the weekend alone, because they have no one else at their table. Some are in the hospital or a care home, watching someone who means the world to them fade away.

Over here, the weekend has been very peaceful. But that's because there are only two of us left; the two who could no longer sit amongst a family that pretended everything was fine, that avoided dealing with the toxic realities, that was emotionally neglectful.

Yesterday, I turned on a YouTube background image that depicts a small town. I said that it made me feel less alone; I could imagine being part of this little town as I sat quietly on the couch reading.

I hope your Thanksgiving has been a special time. I hope you have felt the love and attention of people who care about you.

But if it hasn't been like that, indeed if it has actually been really hard, then I just want you to know that you're not alone right now. I see you and you are not alone.

Here's a useful (and heartbreaking) look at what happens to us when our parents ignore us when we're children: One response is for us to reach out and seek contact and connection with the parent.

Connection is our safety, when we're kids.

But if the parent doesn't respond, we need to intensify our approach. And so, we may start taking care of our parent or undertaking other behaviours that encourage them to notice and connect with us.

Not getting this connection is known as abandonment trauma. And it follows us into adulthood: How many of us feel that if we're not taking care of others, we're not seen or wanted?
